Veteran Student Perspectives: The Value of an MBA

Join a panel of current veteran students to hear about their experiences at HBS and how they have advanced their skills to enter a variety of industries and even to start their own companies. The first half of the session will be a panel of current EC and RC student veterans moderated by Professor Matheson, Faculty Advisor to the Allied Forces Alumni Association. We will then transition to breakout rooms where attendees will have an opportunity for direct Q&A with the student veterans.

Jim Matheson was a Navy F-14/18 pilot, TOPGUN Instructor and Officer-in- charge of the Navy’s West Coast Adversary Unit and retired in 2008 as Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 2001 and then began a second career in entrepreneurship and investing in sustainable energy. Most recently, Jim joined the HBS Faculty in 2019 as a Senior Lecturer and currently teaches the EC Entrepreneurial Finance Course and is a Faculty Affiliate of the Business & Environment Initiative. He is also an active investor and Board Director & Advisor for several companies and VC/PE investment groups including Breakthrough Energy Ventures and The MIT Engine. 
 
Among other passions, Jim is active with climate change, veteran related issues and supporting post-partisan politics, and loves being outdoors, live music, and reading, especially history and the annual Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child.
