This case study provides an inside look at how Jamie, Bita, and the Toyota Production System Support Center (TSSC), partnered with Dallas County, Texas, to increase the efficiency of their mass vaccination site. Dallas County residents were waiting upwards of 4-5 hours to receive their vaccine, and the vaccination site was just asked to deliver even more vaccines in a given day. What was causing this problem and could the Toyota Production System help solve it? Join us to find out!
Willy Shih is the Robert and Jane Cizik Professor of Management Practice in Business Administration. He is part of the Technology and Operations Management Unit, and he teaches in the MBA and Executive Education Programs. His expertise is in manufacturing and product development, and he has written or co-authored numerous cases and teaching materials in industries ranging from semiconductors, information technology, consumer electronics, aerospace, transportation equipment, manufacturing processes and tools, and intellectual property. Prior to coming to HBS in 2007, Willy spent 28 years in industry at IBM, Digital Equipment, Silicon Graphics, Eastman Kodak, and Thomson SA.
Jamie Bonini is vice president of TSSC, a not-for-profit corporation affiliated with Toyota Motor North America (TMNA), headquartered in Plano, Texas. This group within Toyota is dedicated to sharing the “Toyota Production System.” Bonini began his career with Toyota in 2002, as assistant general manager for TSSC, responsible for planning and leading shop floor improvement activities. He later joined Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky's powertrain group as assistant general manager responsible for V6 and four cylinder engines as well as axle production, quality and safety. From 2004-10, he served as general manager for TEMA's supplier commodity engineering division which leads new model projects and mass production supplier development projects in North America.
Bita Behgooy joined TSSC as an analyst upon graduating from college in Spring of 2018. She leads process improvement activities in mid-sized American manufacturing companies and non-profits. She has supported various non-profits in the Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) area and general industry projects in non-automotive industries. This opportunity allows her to interact with organizations by coaching, developing strategy, and hands-on implementation of Toyota Production System (TPS) at all levels she supports, from team members to top management. She is also responsible for TPS workshop delivery and simulations, where prospective companies attend executive level workshops, seminars, and plant tours designed to help businesses implement the TPS. Bita attended the University of Texas at Dallas where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2018.
