Wonder how an MBA can help you transition from the Military to the Private Sector? Join a panel of current HBS students from the Military to hear how they have advanced their skills to enter a variety of industries and even to start their own companies. They will share their backgrounds, and explain how they have cultivated their personal and professional interests while at HBS. The panel moderator will be Professor Jim Matheson, Faculty Advisor to the Allied Forces Alumni Association.
Moderator:
Jim Matheson was a Navy F-14/18 pilot, TOPGUN Instructor and Officer-in- charge of the Navy’s West Coast Adversary Unit, and retired in 2008 as Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 2001 and then began a second career in entrepreneurship and investing in sustainable energy. Most recently, Jim joined the HBS Faculty in 2019 as a Senior Lecturer and currently teaches the EC Entrepreneurial Finance Course and is a Faculty Affiliate of the Business & Environment Initiative. He is also an active investor and Board Director & Advisor for several companies and VC/PE investment groups including Breakthrough Energy Ventures and The MIT Engine.
Among other passions, Jim is active with climate change, veteran related issues and supporting post-partisan politics, and loves being outdoors, live music, and reading, especially history and the annual Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child.
Panelists:
> Charlotte Levine: Prior to HBS, Charlotte led tank and reconnaissance operations in the U.S. Army as one of the nation’s first female armor officers. Charlotte graduated from Cornell University, where she participated in Army ROTC, and will be interning at Bain & Co. this summer.
> John Pedro: A native of upstate New York, John is currently an MBA candidate at HBS. He previously graduated from Cornell University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts in Government. His focus is on building a future of greater economic opportunity and national security through the companies that will revitalize it and the policy that will reshape it. He served on active duty in the U.S. Air Force for five years, leading cross-functional special operations teams training foreign partners. John previously was a research intern at The Hudson Institute and a Publius Fellow at The Claremont Institute. He will be working for Anduril Industries in DC during the summer of 2023 and enjoys running, weightlifting, skiing, and exploring national parks in his free time.
> Liz Lippie Rimmer: Liz Lippie Rimmer is a first-year MBA student at HBS. Liz served for eight years in the U.S. Navy as a surface warfare officer, which included two overseas deployments to INDOPACOM and CENTCOM. Her final tour of duty was as an operational analyst at the U.S. Fleet Forces command, where she designed analytic tools to optimize Fleet operations. Liz interned via the Skillbridge program with Vannevar Labs developing natural language processing technologies that support national intelligence priorities. As an HBS student, Liz is exploring entrepreneurship and defense tech startups.
> Nicholas Hanson: Nick is a first-year MBA student at HBS and a joint degree student with the Harvard Kennedy School. Prior to graduate school, he served for eight years as a ground intelligence officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. After completing his first year at HKS, he left Harvard to join Vannevar Labs for two years. He currently serves as Co-President for Admissions of the HBS Armed Forces Alumni Association.
