Wonder how an MBA can help you transition from the Military to the Private Sector? Join a panel of current HBS students from the Military to hear how they have advanced their skills to enter a variety of industries and even to start their own companies. They will share their backgrounds, and explain how they have cultivated their personal and professional interests while at HBS. The panel moderator will be Professor Jim Matheson, Faculty Advisor to the Allied Forces Alumni Association.
Moderator:
Jim Matheson was a Navy F-14/18 pilot, TOPGUN Instructor and Officer-in- charge of the Navy’s West Coast Adversary Unit, and retired in 2008 as Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 2001 and then began a second career in entrepreneurship and investing in sustainable energy. Most recently, Jim joined the HBS Faculty in 2019 as a Senior Lecturer and currently teaches the EC Entrepreneurial Finance Course and is a Faculty Affiliate of the Business & Environment Initiative. He is also an active investor and Board Director & Advisor for several companies and VC/PE investment groups including Breakthrough Energy Ventures and The MIT Engine.
Among other passions, Jim is active with climate change, veteran related issues and supporting post-partisan politics, and loves being outdoors, live music, and reading, especially history and the annual Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child.
Panelists:
Kristin Wihera is a native of Littleton, CO and graduated from Boston University in 2013. She commissioned via the NROTC program and served as a SWO(N). She is pursuing a career in biotechnology and enjoys hiking, snowboarding, and trying new foods.
Chris Lowman grew up in Matthews, NC and attended the United States Naval Academy. He commissioned as a 2ndLt in the United States Marine Corps in 2014, where he served as a communications officer. Chris will be working for Boston Consulting Group out of its Denver, CO office following graduation.
Dee Taylor grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and he served as a Surface Warfare Office – Nuclear in the US Navy. His first tour was on the USS Carney based in Rota, Spain in 6th Fleet AOR, second tour was in the reactor department of USS Harry Truman based in Norfolk, Virginia with deployments to 5th and 6th fleets. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in electrical engineering. He is planning to pursue tech product management or a start-up after business school.
Prior to HBS, Charlotte Levine led tank and reconnaissance operations in the U.S. Army as one of the nation’s first female armor officers. Charlotte graduated from Cornell University where she participated in Army ROTC and is recruiting for management consulting roles.
Orry McDonald is from Somerville, TN and went to undergrad at Ole Miss. He served on active duty as a Marine artilleryman for eight years and is currently a drilling member of the SMCR. He plans to raise a search fund upon graduation from HBS.
